DCCC has received a ‘It’s On Us’ grant from the Department of Education for the fourth consecutive year. The grant supports efforts that address the issues of sexual assault, both on and off campus, including the very important topic of consent.
According to Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), one in six women and one in 33 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. In addition, 40-47 percent of self-identified gay or bisexual men and self-identified lesbian or bisexual women have experienced sexual violence.
Those who identify as transgender are over four times more likely than cisgender people to be sexually assaulted. The LGBTQ+ community is at greater risk of experiencing sexual assault or violence.
It’s On Us was founded in 2014 as an initiative of the Obama-Biden White House. The program noted the importance of calling everyone into the conversation on sexual assault prevention. Over the last six years, It’s On Us has grown into the nation’s largest nonprofit program dedicated to college sexual assault prevention and survivor support activating students on hundreds of campuses in our awareness and education programs.
In the spirit of diversity, equity, and inclusion, both the Department of Education and the College believes that events like drag shows add value to our college campuses by highlighting a contemporary art form that has historically created safe spaces for underrepresented populations.
