The college’s Art Gallery is honored to present Rico Gatson: Power Portraits, an online version of the Spring 2020 exhibition shuttered by the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 31, 2020.

Gatson’s multidisciplinary artwork celebrates the accomplishments of major Black American cultural and political figures. Power Portraits features examples from Gatson’s Icon series, a group of collages in which Gatson depicts Black creators and politicians using stylistic strategies from the Constructivist movements and Byzantine icon paintings.

With subjects ranging from Toni Morrison and Nikki Giovanni to Medgar Evers and Barack Obama, Gatson’s art historical and cultural references combine to produce multilayered portraits of contemporary Black heroes.
